A Brief History of the Wall Sconce
The wall sconce descends from medieval "light arms," torches fixed to walls to illuminate corridors without obstructing passage. Long before electricity, it was a marvel of ingenuity: it often incorporated a mirror or polished metal plate at the back, an essential technical trick to double the candle's glow through reflection. In the 18th century, it moved from passageways to reception rooms, adorned with bronze and crystal to become a true staging instrument. Its wall position then allowed for highlighting woodwork and architectural reliefs, creating shadow play impossible to achieve with central lighting.
