A Brief History of the Secretary Desk
Born in the 18th century under the impetus of ingenious cabinetmakers like Jean-François Oeben, the secretary desk is the guardian of intimate correspondence. Its fall-front reveals a "gradin" (tier), a set of small drawers and niches designed for meticulous organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, operated by springs concealed beneath a molding. Also known as a "fall-front desk," it remains the ideal piece to conceal one's workspace with a simple, elegant gesture.
