A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
In the past, mirrors of the great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with ornamentation. However, during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style emerged that was less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore intended to be more understated and streamlined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded in a "gendarme’s hat" shape. As for decoration, beads or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlight the cornice with a gold-leaf effect that brightens the whole piece. The large mirrors installed above fireplaces brought clarity and perspective into living areas.
