A brief history of the secretaire
Born in the 18th century under the impetus of ingenious cabinetmakers like Jean-François Oeben, the secretaire is the guardian of intimate correspondence. Its flap reveals a "gradin," a set of small drawers and niches designed for surgical organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, activated by springs concealed under a molding. Also called a "fall-front desk," it remains the ideal piece for concealing your workspace with a simple, elegant gesture.
