A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike the secretary desk, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible base, offering an unadorned space for reflection. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for establishing a workspace with character.
