A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took on the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau. Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide, fixed top and visible legs, offering a space for reflection without embellishment. Also called a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
