A brief history of the desk
It all started with the "bure," a thick brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible legs, offering a space for reflection without artifice. Also called a "flat-top desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
