A Brief History of the Desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick, brown wool cloth that covered the tables of monastic scribes to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took on the name of the fabric that covered it: the bureau (desk). Unlike a secretary desk, it is defined by its large, fixed top and visible legs, offering a straightforward space for reflection. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
