A brief history of the desk
It all began with the "bure," a thick brown woolen cloth that covered the tables of copyist monks to protect their precious manuscripts. By extension, the table itself eventually took the name of the fabric that covered it: the "bureau" (desk). Unlike a secretary, it is defined by its wide fixed top and visible legs, offering a workspace without frills. Also known as a "flat desk," it remains the centerpiece for anchoring a workspace with character.
