A brief history of the candlestick
The candlestick established itself in the Middle Ages as the essential portable tool for carrying a flame without burning oneself. Under Louis XIV, it became a radical class marker: the nobility burned refined beeswax in them, while the common people endured the foul odor of tallow candles. Wax was such a precious commodity that servants in royal palaces would systematically collect the drippings in the bobeche to resell them, turning every residue into profit. In the 18th century, it gained in refinement with the invention of the removable bobeche to facilitate maintenance, establishing itself as the indispensable companion for the bedtime ritual long before the arrival of electricity.
