A brief history of the candlestick
The candlestick emerged in the Middle Ages as the essential portable tool for carrying a flame without getting burned. Under Louis XIV, it became a significant status symbol: the nobility burned refined beeswax, while the common people endured the foul odor of tallow candles. Wax was such a precious commodity that servants in royal palaces would systematically collect the drippings in the bobeche to resell them, turning every residue into profit. In the 18th century, it gained refinement with the invention of the removable bobeche to facilitate maintenance, establishing itself as the indispensable companion for the bedtime ritual long before the arrival of electricity.
