A brief history of the candle holder
In the Middle Ages, the candle holder emerged as the essential nomadic tool for carrying a flame without getting burned. Under Louis XIV, it became a radical class marker: the nobility burned refined beeswax, while the common people endured the foul smell of tallow candles. Wax was such a precious commodity that royal palace valets systematically collected the drips in the tray to resell them, turning every residue into profit. In the 18th century, it became more refined with the invention of the removable sconce to facilitate maintenance, establishing itself as an indispensable companion for the bedtime ritual long before the arrival of electricity.
