A brief history of the sconce
The wall sconce descends from medieval "light arms," those torches fixed to walls to illuminate corridors without obstructing the passage. Long before electricity, it was a marvel of ingenuity: it often incorporated a mirror or polished metal plate at the back, an essential technical trick to double the candle's glow through simple reflection. In the 18th century, it moved from passageways to reception rooms, adorned with bronze and crystal to become a true instrument of staging. Its wall position made it possible to highlight woodwork and architectural reliefs, creating plays of shadows impossible to achieve with central lighting.
