A brief history of the wall lamp
The wall lamp descends from medieval "sconces"—torches fixed to walls to light hallways without cluttering the passage. Long before electricity, it was a marvel of ingenuity: it often incorporated a mirror or polished metal plate at the back, a technical trick essential for doubling the candle's glow through simple reflection. In the 18th century, it moved from transition areas to reception rooms, adorned with bronze and crystal to become a true instrument of staging. Its wall-mounted position allowed it to highlight woodwork and architectural relief, creating plays of shadow impossible to achieve with central lighting.
