A brief history of the wall lamp
The wall lamp descends from medieval "light arms"—torches fixed to walls to illuminate corridors without obstructing the walkway. Long before electricity, it was a marvel of ingenuity, often featuring a mirror or polished metal plate at the back, a technical trick essential for doubling the candlelight through simple reflection. By the 18th century, it moved from transition areas to reception rooms, adorned with bronze and crystal to become a true instrument of mise-en-scène. Its wall-mounted position allowed for highlighting woodwork and architectural details, creating plays of shadow impossible to achieve with central lighting.
