A brief history of the chandelier
The chandelier descends from the heavy medieval "crowns of light" made of wrought iron, which were suspended in cathedral naves to illuminate congregations. Its true revolution occurred in the 17th century with the arrival of crystal: the cut facets allowed the glow of candles to be multiplied through refraction, transforming a precarious flicker into a glittering blaze. At Versailles, this object became an instrument of political power so highly codified that the number of its crystals directly displayed the owner's social rank and wealth in the eyes of the King. Having become the nerve center of reception salons, it has traversed the ages as the ultimate symbol of opulence, evolving from solid bronze to the ethereal glasswork of Murano.
