A brief history of the farmhouse table
A centerpiece of 19th-century rural life, the farmhouse table was built to last for generations and accommodate large peasant meals. It is recognized by its thick solid wood top, often marked by the passage of time, and its sturdy base, which may or may not be connected by a "foot bar" or stretcher. Known as a "refectory table" or "kitchen table," it was designed to withstand daily chores as well as family banquets.
