Although tobacco arrived in Europe in the 16th century, the ashtray as we know it only appeared in the 19th century with the invention of the cigarette, as pipes and cigars had no use for it. It was long an object of high social distinction, often made of Baccarat crystal or silver, before becoming an essential advertising medium in 1950s bistros.
