A brief history of the low armchair
Its name is no coincidence: in the 18th century, the "chauffeuse" (low armchair) was a low chair placed as close as possible to the hearth to warm oneself without hindering the circulation of heat. Its silhouette is recognized by its low seat and high backrest, a structure designed for dressing or breastfeeding by the fire, away from drafts. And did you know? Its low height was primarily used by ladies to more easily put on their stockings and shoes.
