A brief history of the chest of drawers
Its name says it all: it was born to be "convenient" (commode), replacing deep chests where everything was piled up in a jumble. Emerging during the reign of Louis XIV, it was such a prestigious display piece that it often took pride of place in reception bedrooms rather than in wardrobes. It introduced the sliding drawer, a revolution that finally allowed access to belongings without having to empty everything out.
