A brief history of the bookcase
Long reserved for palaces, the bookcase made its way into private homes in the 18th century with the rising taste for literature. It is distinguished by shelves adjustable via a rack system, a technical innovation allowing the height to be adapted to the size of the bindings. Before being a movable piece of furniture, it was often built into the woodwork of chateaus; it was the bourgeoisie who turned it into a standalone piece that could be moved as desired. Whether open or glazed, it is a sanctuary of knowledge, once called a "librairie" in ancient inventories.
