The restoration work preserves its original character: labels retained and varnish carefully applied inside and out, resulting in a rare, ready-to-display piece. A short history of the trunk
One of the oldest known trunks dates back to the golden age of the Egyptian pharaohs. Many trunks were indeed found in Tutankhamun's tomb. Even the Greeks and Romans used them for all important journeys. At that time, the trunk was a chest made of wood and bronze, sometimes decorated with ivory and precious metal ornaments. The lid was flat to allow trunks to be stacked in the means of transport used. With the discovery of America in 1492, trunks filled with all the new fruits and products of the New World crossed the ocean to reach the Old World. The Industrial Revolution swept through the 19th century with the beginning of a new concept of travel trunks. Little by little, the trunk found its way into homes, becoming the perfect container for childhood mementos or a very practical coffee table!
