A short history of the coffee table
Unlike dining tables, the coffee table did not truly emerge until the beginning of the 20th century, alongside the evolution of living rooms towards greater comfort and relaxation. Its structure, deliberately low to align with the seat of armchairs, was inspired by Oriental tea tables and 19th-century coffee stands. Known as a "salon table" or "cocktail table," it is defined by its generous tabletop supported by a short, sturdy base.
