A brief history of the standard lamp
As the heir to the 17th-century "torch-bearing pedestals," the standard lamp revolutionized lighting by moving light away from walls and making it mobile. Its height was historically calibrated to cast light exactly over a reader's shoulder, thus preventing shadows long before the invention of electricity.
