A brief history of the floor lamp
An heir to the 17th-century "torch-bearing pedestals," the floor lamp revolutionized lighting by moving light away from the walls and making it mobile. Historically, its height was calibrated to cast light exactly over a reader’s shoulder, avoiding shadows long before the invention of electricity. At the end of the 18th century, the appearance of air-current oil lamps allowed it to shine independently and steadily, making it the central pivot of reading rooms.
