A brief history of the floor lamp
Heir to the "candle-bearing pedestals" of the 17th century, the floor lamp revolutionized lighting by taking light off the walls and making it mobile. Historically, its height was calibrated to cast light exactly over a reader's shoulder, avoiding shadows long before the invention of electricity. At the end of the 18th century, the appearance of draft-fed oil lamps allowed it to shine autonomously and steadily, making it the centerpiece of reading rooms.
