A brief history of the floor lamp
An heir to the 17th-century "torch-bearing guéridons," the floor lamp revolutionized lighting by moving light off the walls and making it mobile. Historically, its height was calibrated to project light exactly over a reader's shoulder, thus avoiding cast shadows long before the invention of electricity. At the end of the 18th century, the appearance of oil lamps with air currents allowed it to shine autonomously and steadily, making it the central pivot of reading rooms.
