A brief history of the floor lamp
The heir to the 17th-century "torch stands," the floor lamp revolutionized lighting by bringing light out from the walls and making it mobile. Its height was historically calibrated to project light precisely over a reader's shoulder, thus avoiding cast shadows long before the invention of electricity. At the end of the 18th century, the advent of air-current oil lamps allowed it to shine autonomously and steadily, making it the central pivot of reading rooms.
