A Brief History of the Pouf
Appearing in the 18th century, the pouf was originally an entirely upholstered extra seat, with its wooden structure completely hidden beneath the fabric and fringe. Its almost sonorous name evokes the softness of its padding, which allowed ladies to sit without creasing their voluminous dresses, unlike rigid-backed chairs. At its peak during the Second Empire, it was a symbol of uninhibited bourgeois comfort, often adorned with luxurious trimmings that touched the floor.
