A brief history of the ottoman
Appearing in the 18th century, the ottoman was originally an entirely upholstered extra seat, whose wooden structure was completely hidden beneath fabric and fringes. Its name, almost sonorous, evokes the softness of its padding, which allowed ladies to sit without creasing their voluminous dresses, unlike rigid-backed chairs. At its peak during the Second Empire, it was a symbol of uninhibited bourgeois comfort, often adorned with luxurious trimmings that touched the floor.
