A brief history of the ottoman
Appearing in the 18th century, the ottoman was originally a supplementary seat that was entirely upholstered, with its wooden structure completely hidden under fabric and fringe. Its name, almost onomatopoeic, evokes the softness of its padding, which allowed ladies to sit without wrinkling their voluminous dresses, unlike chairs with rigid backs. At its peak during the Second Empire, it was a symbol of uninhibited bourgeois comfort, often adorned with luxurious trimmings that touched the floor.
