Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a dignitary's folding seat, but it evolved under Louis XV to become a comfortable piece of furniture with armrests. Unlike the chair, it prioritizes a wider seat and an inclined backrest, inviting conversation rather than a rigid posture.
