A brief history of the armchair
While chairs are designed for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a folding dignitary's seat, but it evolved under Louis XV to become a comfortable piece of furniture with armrests. Unlike the chair, it features a wider seat and an inclined backrest, inviting conversation rather than rigid posture. Whether it's a "bergère" with full sides to protect from drafts or a lighter "bridge" armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
