A brief history of the armchair
While the chair is designed for work or dining, the armchair was born in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French "faudesteuil," a folding seat for dignitaries, but it evolved under Louis XV to become the comfortable piece of furniture equipped with armrests that we know today. Unlike a standard chair, it prioritizes a wider seat and a reclined back, inviting conversation rather than rigid posture. Whether it is a "bergère" with enclosed sides to shelter from drafts or a lighter "bridge" armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
