With its cane back and velvet cushions, this light-wood armchair in a contemporary style evokes understated elegance while retaining the spirit of the 1930s. Its cane back and armrests create a welcoming seat, while its generous seat height makes it a natural fit for a reading nook or living room. The cushions have been freshly reupholstered and feature removable covers with zips, adding a refined touch of comfort and making everyday care easier. The two carved front legs give it a sophisticated presence, enhanced by the pairing of green and cream. Placed beside a bookcase, it’s perfect for a relaxing moment with an open book and a cup resting on a side table. A second-hand piece, it bears the marks of its past: one area has been restored.

A brief history of the armchair
While a chair is designed for work or dining, the armchair emerged in the 17th century with a single purpose: rest. Its name derives from the Old French “ faudesteuil,” a folding seat for a dignitary, but it came into its own under Louis XV, becoming the comfortable piece of furniture with armrests we know today. Unlike a chair, it offers a wider seat and a reclined back, inviting conversation rather than rigid posture. Whether it’s a “bergère,” with full sides to shield its occupant from drafts, or a lighter “bridge” armchair, it embodies the evolution of the art of living.
