A brief history of the secretary desk
Born in the 18th century under the impetus of brilliant cabinetmakers like Jean-François Oeben, the secretary desk was the guardian of intimate correspondence. Its drop-front reveals a "gradin," a set of small drawers and niches designed for surgical organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, activated by springs concealed under a molding. Also known as a "bureau à abattant," it remains the ideal piece to conceal one's workspace with a simple, elegant gesture.
