A Brief History of the Secretary Desk
Born in the 18th century under the guidance of brilliant cabinetmakers like Jean-François Oeben, the secretary desk is the guardian of intimate correspondence. Its drop-leaf opens to reveal a "stepped" interior, a set of small drawers and niches designed for precise organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, operated by springs concealed beneath a molding. Also known as a "drop-leaf desk," it remains the ideal piece for hiding one's workspace with a single elegant gesture.
