A brief history of the secretary desk
Created in the 18th century by master cabinetmakers such as Jean-François Oeben, the secretary desk was designed to keep private correspondence secure. Its drop-down top reveals a "stepped" interior featuring small drawers and compartments designed for meticulous organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, operated by springs concealed beneath the moulding. Also known as a "drop-top desk," it remains the ideal piece for concealing your workspace with a simple, elegant gesture.
