A brief history of the secretary desk
Born in the 18th century under the impetus of ingenious cabinetmakers like Jean-François Oeben, the secretary desk is the guardian of intimate correspondences. Its flap reveals a "tier," a set of small drawers and niches designed for meticulous organization. Some models even hid secrets: drawers invisible to the naked eye, activated by springs concealed under a molding. Also called a "fall-front desk," it remains the ideal piece to conceal one's workspace with a simple, elegant gesture.
