A brief history of the commode
Its name says it all: it was born to be "convenient," replacing the deep chests where everything was piled in a jumble. Appearing during the reign of Louis XIV, it was such a prestigious display piece that it often took pride of place in reception bedrooms rather than closets. It introduced the sliding drawer, a revolution that finally allowed access to one's belongings without emptying everything out. Whether called a "sauteuse" commode (on tall legs) or a "tombeau" commode, it is defined by its generous top and a front punctuated by two or three rows of drawers.
