A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of the great monarchs were recognizable by their heavily decorated cornices. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore more understated and streamlined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but moulded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded, in the shape of a policeman's hat. For decoration, beads or acanthus leaves on the lower part underline the cornice with a gold leaf effect that illuminates the whole. Large mirrors installed on fireplaces bring brightness and perspective to living spaces.
