A brief history of the Louis-Philippe mirror
In the past, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices, heavily laden with ornament. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style emerged, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors therefore became more understated and pared back. Unlike mirrors from earlier periods, the wood was no longer carved, but moulded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a shako. For decoration, beading or acanthus leaves along the lower section accentuated the cornice, with a gold-leaf finish that brightened the whole piece. Large mirrors placed above fireplaces brought light and a sense of space to living rooms.
