A short history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of the great monarchs were recognizable by their ornate cornices. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe's mirrors were more sober and refined. Unlike mirrors of previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlight the cornice with a gilded gold leaf effect that illuminates the whole. The large mirrors installed on the fireplaces bring clarity and perspective to the living rooms.
