A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their ornately decorated cornices. But during the reign of Louis Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis Philippe's mirrors were thus more understated and refined. Unlike mirrors of previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gilded effect, using gold leaf to illuminate the whole piece. Large mirrors placed above fireplaces brought light and perspective to living rooms.
