A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their ornately decorated cornices. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe's mirrors were thus more understated and refined. Unlike mirrors of previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gilded effect, using gold leaf to illuminate the whole piece. Large mirrors placed above fireplaces brought light and perspective to living rooms.
