A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
Back then, the mirrors of the great monarchs were recognizable by their heavily decorated cornices. However, during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore intended to be more sober and refined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood is no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame is rounded in a "gendarme's hat" shape. For decoration, beads or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlight the cornice with a gold-leaf effect that illuminates the whole piece. Large mirrors installed on fireplaces bring clarity and perspective to living areas.
