A brief history of the Louis Philippe mirror
In that era, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with decorations. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore simpler and more refined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue-based primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gilded leaf effect that brightened the whole. Large mirrors installed over fireplaces brought clarity and perspective to living rooms.
