A Brief History of the Louis Philippe Mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with decorations. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors then became more sober and streamlined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gold leaf effect that illuminated the whole. Large mirrors installed over fireplaces brought clarity and perspective to living spaces.
