A Brief History of the Louis Philippe Mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with decorations. But during Louis-Philippe's reign, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe's mirrors were then designed to be more sober and refined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, beads or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gilded effect using gold leaf that illuminated the whole. Large mirrors installed on fireplaces brought clarity and perspective to living rooms.
