A Brief History of the Louis Philippe Mirror
At the time, the mirrors of great monarchs were recognizable by their cornices laden with decorations. But during the reign of Louis-Philippe, a bourgeois style developed, less concerned with originality than with comfort. Louis-Philippe mirrors were therefore more sober and refined. Unlike mirrors from previous eras, the wood was no longer carved, but molded and coated with a glue primer. The top of the mirror frame was rounded, in the shape of a gendarme's hat. For decoration, pearls or acanthus leaves at the bottom highlighted the cornice with a gilded effect using gold leaf that illuminated the whole. Large mirrors installed above fireplaces brought clarity and perspective to living rooms.
